My Europe Tour: Other NL Areas

June 25 - 26, 2016

After Amsterdam, we went to Woudrichem, our home for the next 2 days. We stayed at the place of Tony and Glen Ouwerkerk. They were such an accommodating couple.  Breakfast, lunch, dinner, plus the service, we could not ask for more.

With the Ouwerkerks.

Tony and Glen picked us up at the Breda train station, approximately 2 hours from Amsterdam Centrale. We went straight to their house to have a quick rest and to have our dinner.  Immediately after dinner, they brought us to Kinderdijk, Alblasserwaard and Scheveningen, Den Haag.

Windmills at Kinderdijk

They say a trip to Holland will not be complete without a picture of the windmills. 19 mills were constructed around 1740 as part of a larger water management system to prevent floods. They are actually a symbol of Dutch water management.  In 1997, these windmills received recognition as a UNESCO world heritage site.

Scheveningen Beach

After the windmills, we went for a stroll at the Scheveningen beach, Holland's most famous seaside resort. We just walked along the boulevard for about an hour, took some pictures, and then head back home.

The Atomium

"The story of the Atomium is, above all, one of love, the love that the Belgians have for an extraordinary structure symbolising a frame of mind that wittily combines aesthetic daring with technical mastery. The appearance of the Atomium is unusual and unforgettable. It has a rare quality of lifting everyone’s spirits and firing their imagination." - Diane Hennebert, 2008

The Atomium was the main pavilion and icon of the World Fair of Brussels (1958) or Expo 58. It symbolized the democratic will to maintain peace among all the nations, faith in progress, both technical and scientific and, finally, an optimistic vision of the future of a modern, new, super-technological world for a better life for mankind (source:  www.atomium.be).  The Atomium represents an elementary iron crystal enlarged 165 billion (thousand million) times

Sint-Janskathedraal - 'S-Hertogenbosch

Saint John’s Cathedral, or Sint Janskathedraal in Dutch, is one of the architectural highlights in Hertogenbosch city, also known as Den Bosch. The Gothic church was erected between 1370 and 1529 and is decorated with extraordinary sculptured detail.  Unfortunately, I was not able to take a closer look a the detail as it rained that day.  We were also not able to go inside :(
